Title: Corny Me!, 2D Mixed Media/Collage
No Image Available This self-portrait collage started out as just a self-portrait drawing for an out of class drawing. Later in the year, I was assigned a collage project and I decided to take the drawing and transform it into a collage. I drew it on a mat board, then I decided that I wanted an extremely texture based project, so I chose corn and rice for my elements. I wanted to create a tactile and visual texture. After I finished drawing the image on the board, I laid the corn along the edge of my head and hair line, and in the middle I laid the corn more at a random. I then laid the rice down at random and decided it didn't look right. I took the rice off and laid them each individually in rows. After I was content with the placing of the elements, I glued everything down, starting with the corn. I chose the corn for my hair, since I have blonde hair, and I chose the rice because it was something different, and I can make the colors more vibrant through the transparentness. When it was time to glue the rice, I painted it first by painting the many skin colors in groups and then letting them dry. After they were dry, I picked them up one by one with a tweezers and laid them onto the glue. I soon realized the colors were off, so I just laid them in the same pattern but without the paint on them. After the rest of the face and neck were laid, I then painted the various shades of my face onto the rice. Finally, the shirt was the last part to finish! I painted the corn my favorite shade of purple and then let them dry. After everything had dried, I laid the corn in a sequence. The final project was finished! I spent nine weeks, in and out of class, working on this collage. The most amount of time I spent straight working on it was about ten hours. This project was extremely time consuming, but in the end it taught me patience and I was proud of how it all turned out.
