I was intrigued by the story of a rescue bird that a family member owns. A few years ago my grandfather had acquired a cockatoo from an abusive home and since then has been nurturing him back to health. I wanted to be able to put his story into an art piece to portray his freedom now that he is out of an abusive setting. In my piece I wanted to use recycled materials to better connect to the story and to give the background a scrappy look to narrate the birdÂ’s background. The background of my piece consists of music sheets, homemade paper, and magazine clippings. I used a neutral color scheme to accent my subject. My subject, the bird, was made using a collage of materials such as felt, burlap, seashells, and braided cord. The inspiration for my piece came from an artist by the name of Loui Jover who uses the similar idea of creating a collaged background that accents his subject.
