|Objective(s): Understand details the National Core Arts Standards in music
Connect NCAS, Minnesota standards, and current practice
Take away practical ideas in creating and responding to music
Connect with job-alike colleagues in the region for ongoing sharing
|Description: Experience practical ideas you can use in your K-12 music classrooms and network with colleagues in the region. Here's an opportunity to uncover some of the mystery and challenge of teaching through the new 2014 National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) in music and the Minnesota Standards.
|Post Five Day Evaluation: I found it very interesting that the standard requirements are no longer a "check-list" of skills, but more of a guidance system towards creating music capable adults.
|Post Three Month Evaluation: I have really enjoyed using this approach in having students compose. Instead of having to sit and analyze things like notes and rhythms, I can think about whether they learned something and enjoyed the process of creating something completely their own. I feel this approach makes music seem much more accessible and enjoyable overall. I really love the idea of fostering a love of the art form and striving to teach that more than checking off a list of things students will forget - unless they become a professional in the music field.
