Week: 02/01/2010 Instructor: Constance Knott Academics
THIS WEEK'S GOALS: We are working on preparing for our February 22 concert. We have finished quarter 2 skills checklists.We will work small group ensembles this week in earnest.
ENSEMBLE WORK: The class is divided into 6 groups of 6. Each ensemble will strive to have at least one performance at the concert. A piece ready for performance includes a melody played by the keyboardist, harmony played by guitars and/or mallet instruments, rhythm played on hand drums, other rhythms played on auxiliary percussion. Each ensemble will create, assign, and practice the individual parts for their chosen composition. Often the biggest challenge is staying together and maintaining accurate rhythms. The other big challenge is keeping all members of the group involved so that time is not wasted. At the beginning of class they will fill out a goal sheet; at the end of class they will rate their team's and their own productivity for the day. This will be handed in every time we do small group work.
CLASS WORK: We will practice guitars as a group on our chosen folk song. We will also do an analysis of one pop song.
COMMENTARY: Ideally, every ensemble member would have the opportunity to have his/her piece practiced and played by the other ensemble members. They have all composed their own songs and can play them on keyboards. We are finding the processes more time consuming that originally imagined...
