7-8 Life Music 3rd Q 09.10 Lesson Plans
Week: 03/01/2010 Instructor: Constance Knott Academics
Announcements: Last week we set goals for the coming weeks. The students received a list of requirements for piano, guitar, rhythms, and composing. They may choose to compose for the piano, guitar, or a rhythm ensemble. (They will perform this composition for a class recital or at our spring concert.)Another option is that they may be part of an ensemble that would perform at our spring concert. 15 students indicated an interest in ensemble work again, but it is not required this quarter.
As a class we are going to choose a golden oldie to play and sing on guitars. Every student will be required to play guitar for one folk song.
In the coming weeks we will continue to listen to popular songs for element analysis
Goals this Week:
1. Improve and refine initial effort on 12 bar (3 or 6 phrases) rhythm pattern
2. Practice the same with drums, reading out loud, playing one another's in class. Our emphasis is on form, repetition and contrast, resting places, and movement through the phrases.
3. Begin composing song. Students may use the rhythm patterns they created as a framework, but most will likely need to simplify since part of their requirement is that they need to be able to play their song. Again, the focus will be on form, repetition, contrast, phrase shape or use of sequences, and places of rest.
4. Those wanting to work with an ensemble again will start talking this week and organizing their ideas and responsibilities.
5. As a group we will choose our golden oldie and start practicing.
6. We will also continue working our folk songs: Drunken Sailor, Marianne, He's Got the Whole World. We will add two more.
7. Listen to one pop piece and do an analysis.
8. Lots of time for individual practice.
