Finish watching "Open Range"
Discuss the "long drive"; what was life like on these drives (dangers, etc.). How did the long drive change --no more free grazing, water, etc. Effect of barbed wire, pioneers, etc.
Tuesday:
The Native Americans--C 19 Sec. 3

How were they treated? Broken treaties, land taken from them, attempts to Americanize them.
Wednesday:
Hunting of the buffalo; extinction
Introduction of horses by Mexicanos
Battles of Native Americans with white Army and settlers.






Thursday:
Gold rushes--effect on Native Americans

Show video--The Dakota Uprising w/worksheet

Discuss Slaughter's Slough
Friday:
Everyday life on the plains--isolation, native Americans, hardships

Westward movement wasn't all excitement and adventure. Many lost their lives moving west.
