Discuss the mark of an educated person.
Note taking strategies: outlining, clustering.

Two contrasting settlements: Jamestown and Plymouth; read "Comment:The First Settler"; read "The New Land", list appeals and promises.
A bit of a naturalist: read "Bears", discuss the personification present in the piece. Do a "Bears" piece from our environment.
Find the qualities of the Pilgrims in comparison and contrast with the Puritans.
A religious undercurrent: read "The History of Plymouth Plantation"; discuss the influence of religion on Bradford's world view, contrast with the influence of religion on our lives.
A mild version of Puritanism and an angry one: read Bradstreet, Taylor, Edwards (extended mtaphor/conceit, symbolism, paradox, mythological allusions). List other possibilities for building metaphors (as in Edwards and Taylor).
