Intro to "The Crucible"--the witchhunt; the Salem trials as a metaphor; read through p. 36; consider the structure of the play; consider the introductions and development of the characters.

Spell/vocab fill in blanks.

Read "The Crucible" through Act I; questions: list lines that show that Hale is "precise"; what evidence does Giles have that suggests his wife might be suspect?; what might lead characters like Tituba and Betty to confess to something and accuse others without the confessions and accusations being true? What might motivate them?
Prepare a minute or so of dialog for a class dramatic reading.
