Two settlements, then three (1607, 1620, 1630)--economic, religious; read "The First Settlers", p. 25, questions: what was the survival rate?

The philosophical movements; Puritianism foundations--the basics; read handout on Puritanism, list the tenents; in the literature of Edward Taylor; read Housewifery, p. 46, list the qualities that echo the tenents; the metaphor, the conceit.
Tuesday:
How to read a poem.

Puritanism with a Calvanistic blend--human corruption; hear/read "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", p.p. 41-42; the use of extended metaphor, the qualities that echo the tenent; list the extended metaphors.

The sweet side of Puritanism: Anne Bradstreet; read "Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10, 1666", handout, questions: who owns her stuff?, what would you miss the most? why? what's vanity mean? at what point does the narrator seem to clear her head suddenly after drifting off a bit?
Read "To My Dear and Loving Husband", p. 44, questions: what's the narrator's husband love better than? describe the paradoxical statement at the end.
Read "The Flesh and the Spirit", handout, questions handout.
Wednesday:
Find common themes in Edwards ("Sara Pierrepont") and Bradstreet ("Upon the Burning of Our House").

Arrange the pieces in order of most strictly Puritanistic/Calvinistic to least.

A shift in Philosophy, a pretty big liberalization: Romanticism; find some tenents in "The Wild Honeysuckle", p. 51; the structure.

Thursday:
Romanticism tenents; read p. 96; list tenents.

Spell/vocab word list/definitions--"Thanatopsis".

Romanticism in "Thanatopsis", p. 94, questions: what does one become? with whom does one rest? what little list encompases all the ages of man (see Shakespeare, too)?

Friday:
Spell/vocab sentence/word match--"Thanatopsis".

Read "A Walk at Sunset", handout, questions handout.

Read "Journey of Life", handout, questions handout.

Read "The Westwind", handout, questions handout.
