Announcements: On Monday, Daniel Knudson,Justin Knakmuhs, Amanda Deprez,Ellie Vondracek and Mrs. Knott will be taking part in the Dorian Festival at Luther College. This is an outstanding experience the students will never forget. 1400 students will attend the two day event which culminates in a concert Monday evening. Tuesday the choir will work on a song analysis of their individual choosing and drill the Star Spangled Banner in Mrs. Knott's absence. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will require finishing voice skills testing handing in completed portfolios.Choralaires will meet on Wednesday, Boys' 50's Thursday and on Friday we'll have a special rehearsal of Vocal Jazz because of two missed Monday sessions. On Saturday, 14 students are going to take part in the annual Barbershop Quartet event in Jackson, sponsored by the Windom Area Chordhustlers. This is a great learning and growing experience for members of Boys' 50's and Choralaires. Its getting about time to get the students thinking about ensembles and solos for contest too. Probably get a survey out at the new semester. Most of the first semester students will remain for the second semester. Next week we will inform you as to the outcomes ofour fundraising efforts. The trip is definitely on and we may need to come up with some creative ideas for additional funding.
Music: The students chose their selections for the upcoming Pops Concert: "Bless the Broken Road: "Build Me Up Buttercup", "Stand By Me", and "Hallelujah" from Shrek.
The senior meeting led us to choose category II music for contest in March, and we will do two pieces that were selected by our music selection committee. "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal" and "Bashana Haba 'ah" are the two they chose. We will be working simultaneously on all six of these.
Voice Skills: As stated above, the students are being tested on these. I'm listening for efficient breath energy, correct concept of tone, well shaped vowels, while looking at posture and effort.
Reading Skills: Part of the voice skills test is sightreading music in tune. The students write in note names and the do-re-mi names of all the notes (depending on the key) and sing the exercises in small groups.
Listening and Analysis Skills: We listened to ourselves from the Christmas concert. We've done one sheet together that analyzed the "Hallelujah Chorus" and as stated above the students are doing the second one Tuesday during choir.
