Choir 3rd Q 07.08 Lesson Plans
Week: 02/18/2008 Instructor: Constance Knott Academics
Announcements: Large group contest is in a month, and solo / ensemble contest is in two months! Lots of work to do! Our senior advisory group voted to have an adult clinician come to work with us this year,so we have Mr. Russell Svenningsen from SMSU coming on the 27th (next Wednesday). The plan is to have him work with the boys first from 8:00 - 8:30 and then the full choir from 8:30 - 10:00. Therefore our work is cut out for us in the rehearsals leading up to his arrival. We have the first half of "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal" somewhat worked out and have tackled the notes on the Hebrew piece "Bashana" We will be singing that piece in Hebrew and will study and practice the text this week. The challenges in the other piece include rhythms, the fact that it is unaccompanied, and that it divides into multiple parts for each section of the choir. The special groups will meet as usual, with the Vocal Jazz meeting on Friday (because of no school President's day.)The plan is to get all music, tapes, and schedule to students involved in solo/ensemble contest to them this week.
Voice Skills: We are spending most of our vocal warmup time exploring resonance and how to achieve it by combining this skill with the concepts we learned last semester: body alignment, space inside the mouth while opening the mouth for vowels, good breath management, energizing the tone. We also will put a lot of emphasis on entrances and releases (cutoffs)
Music Analysis Skills: As we strive to create art we look carefully at text meaning and how we as musicians bring it to life with the music. Both of our pieces we will examine for text interpretation and meaning; discuss vocabulary, and look carefully at the intentions of the composer and writer of the text. Our goal is to sing artistically and meaningfully as we learn the music.
Listening Skills: Perhaps there will be a moment or two this week when we can listen to the recording of our Pops Concert! If not, we will for sure begin recording ourselves (singing parts of our contest songs) next week for self analysis.
Theory / Reading Skills: I attended the Minnesota Music Educators Association convention last week and got some new ideas for music reading. I've got to study the information some more yet and then try to implement it in relation to our contest music. Stay tuned.
