Choir 9-12 1st Q 09.10 Lesson Plans
Week: 11/09/2009 Instructor: Constance Knott Academics
Announcements: Shorter week, but lots to accomplish! We are working diligently on our Christmas music and enjoying the pieces immensely. Special groups meet as scheduled, with Vocal Jazz likely meeting on Friday of this week , due to no school on Monday. We finished up vocal and reading skills small group tests last week. The seniors evaluated how it was done and made some recommendations for next time. The choir is taking part in the Veteran's Day program. We will be singing "Nation's Creed" and "Inscription of Hope". We will be getting our yearly invitations to sing the Hallelujah Chorus prepared for surrounding churches.
Voice Skills: We consciously practiced what I call the "7 Fundamentals for Singers" this last quarter. Now in the second quarter we will begin what I call the "5 Fundamentals for Choral Singing". To create a lovely choral sound requires careful adherence to a number of things. The first fundamental we are going to address is the blend/breath energy relationship. We are going to study the anatomy of breathing, the breathing process, and explore how well done breathing contributes to an overall unified sound to the choir.
Music Reading Skills: We are continuing the drmfs exercises. With rhythms we are going to branch into the concept of macro and micro beats and rests and continue the multi-tasking skills.
Listening Skills: We are going to record ourselves at Veteran's Day and then use the listening page in our folders to write evaluations together.
Repertoire: I Saw Three Ships: Emphasize text and dynamics, rhythmic energy. Star Carol: introductory analysis, learn A section and F section. Ding Dong Merrily: work p. 9,10,11 and drill page 8 boys esp. "Home Christmas: introductory analysis, learn first song of the medley. Hallelujah Chorus: we will get a good start on it this week!
