Monday:
An overview of the coursethe syllabus, the genre the students will write, evaluation criteria, the grammar topics covered and to what goals, journals, journal evaluation criteria, homework.

Attitudes towards writing--read p.p. 8-12 (including exercises). During the reading you encounter 17 quotations from various authors. Review them and select one that has particular meaning to you, a perspective you admire or disdain, a notion that you can relate to. Write at least a page in response. When youre finished with the response, write an additional half page or so about how you responded. Was responding easy? Difficult? Did you use a strategy? Did you learn something while responding? Did you write paragraphs with which you focused your ideas?
Tuesday:
Essay of place--example: Notes from the Country Club, (Prose Reader, p.p. 75-85) Kimberly Wozencraft; intro

After each reading summarize a place the author reveals. How important is place to the author? How do the the locations and atmosphere affect plot? Theme? What senses does the author address?

Essay of place--example: from Coming Into The Country, (p.p. 1-13) John McPhee

List five places that are important to you. Prepare to justify your list during class discussion
