Sentence elements review; indirect objects--definition, identification exercises.
Discuss the reasons behind sentence element study--discipline, pronoun usage; consider the implications of the English pronoun list, compare to German: flexibility and inflexibility of sentence patterns.
Essay writing--review ex. 4, p. 462; read the essay on p. 461, using the thesis statement as a model, write a thesis statement whose subject relates to the qualities of successfull people at school--student, teacher, principal etc.; write three topics (as in ex. 4, p. 462), then write the three topic sentences.
Read "By the Waters of Babylon"; respond to the following questions: where and when do you think it takes place at first? where and when does it actually take place? Do active reading handout.
Review "By the Waters of Babylon", questions; discuss the importance of setting in the story; discuss themes and messages about the themes the story presents.
Review sentence elements--subject, verb, direct object, indirect object.
Write the body paragraphs for the essay work begun on Tuesday.
Quiz on sentence elements--subject, verb, direct object, indirect object.
Lecture on hook, conclusion, essay coherence; write the hook and the conclusion for the essay begun on Tuesday.
Review quiz on sentence elements.
Reducing wordy sentences: sentence to clause, clause to phrase, phrase to word--ex. 9, p. 387; sentence combining--with phrases: ex. 11, p. 389, by coodination: ex. 12, p. 390, by subordination: ex. 13, p. 392.
Read "Dog Star"; respond: why is setting important in the story.
