Intro to course--overview: literature study, writing practice and study, language study; State Grad Standards; grading; discipline.

Descriptive writing--character; developing who someone is: moving from the abstract to the concrete; list traits, select one, develop a person who is that trait (without naming the trait).
1. Pick a person
2. Decide who or what the person is
3. Prove it
Descriptive writing--read "The Blood of the Martyrs"; discuss character traits of Gregor Malzius; support the identification of character trait with evidence from the story.

Select one of the four character traits Malzius possesses; write the trait with a character or place. Hear Hemmingway's "Smell of Death" from "For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Seminar--good writing: concrete vs abstract, connotation and denotation (and avoiding loaded language), figurative language (and avoiding cliche); ex. 1-6.
