Intro to epic literature/poetry--characteristics of epic poetry/literature: nine convention; epics we know.

Writing sample: an important place from the summer



Thursday:
Type writing sample using proscribed format

Gilgamesh--how one gets a monster or superhero to do what one wants; read Prologue--Gilgamesh King in Uruk and The Coming of Enkidu; in groups--list evidence of the conventions; a very brief history of the poem; what the audience of the work believed; what separates Enkidu from the animals



Reading skills--vocabulary development: understanding by understanding context, figurative language, symbolism, mood, tone, irony, satire; context clues: comparison, contrast, definition, restatement, example; practice 1, p.p. 29-30

Independent reading book selection; independent reading
