As an assignment, we were given free reign with a blank sheet and asked to make an abstract composition. I have found abstract art is very difficult to begin and follow through with. I started by making layers, the first with acrylic paint that I scraped. I was happy with the first layer and tried to respond to what I had done, move on, and develop the next layers. Each layer was done with a number of different things including spray paint, tape, string and buttons. Honestly, this has been the most intuitive thing I've ever done. I added dimension with the offset squares made by using tape. The strong whites against the darks add contrast and balance. I even draped string over the whole thing to add some height and dimension. I added the buttons for needed texture and then, using a computer and photos of the work, cropped it in many different ways until I found one that really worked. Therefor the name of this piece, ABSTRACTS I and II. |
