Title: Topsy Turvy, Ceramics
I created this set of abstract mugs sort of by accident. I was telling my instructor that I wanted to make sets of pieces with abstract looking handles and textures to draw attention. These crooked mugs are what came out of that idea! The shape of these mugs draws attention because they are cut and reattached in the middle at a slant, but the bottom is tilted to cancel out the slant in the opposite direction. After the first few were made, they reminded me of something from Alice in Wonderland. With that vision in my mind, I chose glazes that would continue the whimsical look that I had started. I like these mugs because they immediately draw a persons eye with their unique shape and abstract design. The biggest challenge in making this set was figuring out the correct angle to make the cut, and being sure that they would fit together correctly every time. Making them as uniform as possible also brought a challenge but the slight differences in all of them also add to that whimsical feeling of falling down the rabbit hole.hence the name Topsy Turvy!
